Facilitating SESD (socio-emotional skills development)

Welcome to the Facilitating Socio-emotional Skills Development (SESD) Resource Hub.

This hub brings together a collection of resources and activities to enable you to develop high quality, intentional practices that will support young people in their socio-emotional skills development.

How to use this Resource Hub?

We will signpost you to specific resources as you progress through the SELTOF training. However, it is useful to understand how the different topics are grouped.

To begin with, we have the SEL Essentials section which supports you to build a foundational understanding of socio-emotional skills and how skill building in social, emotional, and cognitive competencies occurs in the multiple different places that learning happens.

We then have three streams of learning:

  1. Cognitive Development

  1. Emotional Development

  1. Social Development

Each stream begins with a longer ‘Foundations and Self-Awareness of’ [FASA] session, which will support you to:

  • Explain how the basic elements of each socio-emotional skill fit together within a framework of cognitive, emotional, and social development;

  • Identify your own strengths, needs, interests, and constraints related to learning and cognitive, emotional, and social development; and

  • Understand ways in which your background, experiences, privilege, biases, and/or discrimination have affected your attitudes toward learning and your expectations about other’s learning.

Each ‘FASA’ module will support you to build your foundational knowledge and self-awareness, both of which are essential competencies for going on to support young people’s socio-emotional skills development in a high quality and reflective way. These are essential for moving onto each of the Methods which focus on key staff practices and young people’s experiences for specific skills, as listed below:

Cognitive Development

  1. Engaging young people in supported struggle

Emotional Development
